Vision (for the non-blind)

26 07 2010

I wear glasses and/or contacts. Well, I guess not both at the same time. But I alternate, sometimes one more than others.

Big Daddy does not. Although he hasn’t been to an eye doctor in years and I bet he SHOULD.

Today I had an appointment with a new eye doctor. When I first moved to Indy, I went to Ossip. Worst. Decision. Ever. I felt very taken advantage of – they charged me HUNDREDS up front (and told me “That’s how it’s done in Indiana”) and were rude. They even missed a medical issue- I all of a sudden became unable to tolerate my contacts. I had to buy new glasses (and for those of you with perfect eyesight- you only get insurance coverage on one OR the other each year. So since I had put it towards contacts, my glasses were 100% out of pocket. Another few hundred.) They put me on tons of new contacts but nothing was bearable. Guess what? They missed that a side effect of my then-birth control pill was “problems with contact lenses.” I had to figure that out on my own. Needless to say, if you think a doctor sucks, stop going! Find a new one!

For people like B, I wonder if they realize what it’s like to be vision-impaired? Personally, I’m nearsighted. My right eye is -4.25 and my left eye is -2.25. I have slight astigmatisms developing in both eyes, 1 whole “degree” on the left and just a quarter on the right. My eyes frequently get worse and worse- in middle school I only wore one contact, a -.25 in my right eye. How things have changed in 10 or 12 years.

While getting my eyes tested today (at my new, wonderful eye doctor) I realized that my vision is a heck of a lot like the Macro setting on a camera!

This would be normal vision (who doesn’t like Seinfeld?!) or, what I see through glasses or contacts. (Taken with my camera on normal.)

And this would be what I see without glasses or contacts. (Taken with my camera’s Macro setting.)

But what makes it most like Macro is that, when you put something up close to the lens (aka my eyes) it gets more in focus the closer it gets.

Um, ew. Someone needs a manicure!

Anyone out there have perfect vision? I wonder if this would make you understand what it’s like to not be able to really see 100%. Just try to live through a Macro lens!

My awesome new doctor tried many lenses on me. The astigmatism made things a little blurry/out of focus, so I went home with samples of a new type of contact. I used to use Acuvue, but am trying Bausch & Lomb SofLens with Aspheric Optics. Because I know you all care.

How’s your vision, you readers out there? Anyone else have a spouse with perfect vision to be jealous of?

Oooh ME! I have horrible vision like it has gotten so bad I can barely distinguish shapes I can only really see colors, when I’m not wearing glasses or contacts. Stupid G has PERFECT vision like can read signs so far away that I can barely even see with my glasses/contacts. I’m praying our future children get his vision and not mine!

Mine has only recently started to get all crappy on me, later in life. Same thing happened to my parents and my sister. I have astigmatism in both eyes, but honestly, it only bothers me at night, and especially in the rain. Or if I’m trying to read in too dark of a room. I have glasses, but never wear them. They make feel seasick, which everyone said would go away or I’d get used to it. That didn’t happen. 😦

Your not alone! I just went to the eye doc last week! So you know how they do the eye pressure test where they puff air in ur eye. I hate that but anyway my eye pressure is “high” meaning its above 18. its usually about a 20 and 23 is the highest. So last year i went to a specialist and hes like ur fine thats just how your eyes are. So the doc was like ummm you need to get this checked out and I said I did last year im fine. I didnt want to get my eye dialated bc I didnt think i need too. Anyway Im -5.25 in one eye and -5.50 in the other i think. its up there lol. As you know I’ve been wearing glasses since I was in 2nd grade. It wasn’t until I moved to FL that i changed to contacts.
I love them now. I also have a lazy eye so when im super tired I see double in one eye and it goes out to the left. I spent many years in PT to make it strong . When i first found out I had it it would just go out on its own. But now I have control and can make it go in or out. Its creeppy but fun lol.

I don’t know if I necessarily have “perfect” vision, but I don’t wear glasses/contacts. Although I think I’ll need them eventually. Josh has better vision than me for SURE, though. And yeah, it’s definitely annoying. But I kinda want glasses because I think they look cute on me. Ha, so vain, right? Glad you found a Dr. you like! I hate mean doctors. Grrr.

I’m super lucky, I’m the only one in my family with 20/20. The rest of them are practically blind without glasses/contacts. Holy cow, am I glad I have good vision, because contacts freak me out. Actually, eyeballs freak me out.

But my hubby really needs to go to the eye doctor. He used to wear glasses, as a kid, and stopped because he had some whackado conspiracy theory that they would get better if he stopped wearing glasses. He’s full of crap. He can’t read street signs until we’re on top of them. Now he blames not going on us not having much money. Incidentally, I won’t let him read how much those jerks charged you this year!

Don’t be swayed!!! My new eye doc just cost me contacts an my small copayment. AND he was very up-front about contact costs, how to save, etc, and they didn’t even charge me my copayment yet! (Said they’d wait til I was sure I found the right contacts.) You just need to get a good recommendation.

I’d been following your wedding blog and now found you here πŸ™‚

Just wondering what kind of problem you were having with your contacts because of your birth control? 2 years ago it became impossible for me to wear contacts after wearing them for 15 years. My eyes would become super red and dry, with some white spots that the optometrist said could make me blind.

Now I’m getting married in August and would love to wear contacts for the big day. Maybe I should look into the birth control thing too?

Great blogs!

Thanks for following me here too!!!

I had a friend who looked up side effects of her BC pill and found that it was the cause of her weight gain (she was tiny and super healthy and randomly put on 15 lbs). I stupidly decided that that must be the cause of my 40+ lb gain so I searched my BC pill name and “side effects” and while weight gain was not one, “problems with contact lenses” was one. They would make my eyes feel RAW and I was super aware of them at all times. I would search ALL medications you’re taking because something has to have caused you to have these symptoms! Good luck!!!

I feel ya – I’m -4.25 in both eyes. I started wearing glasses in 4th grade, but back then it was cool to have glasses. Oh my, why did I want to be cool?! Started wearing contacts in 6th grade and never looked back until summer 2008. I was wearing my contacts longer than I should – 2 week disposables became 4-6 week disposables and yea, I screwed my eyes up. For MONTHS I couldn’t wear contacts and not just because my doc told me not to, but because it was PAINFUL. Then from March 09 – Oct 09 (yup, right in my wedding and honeymoon) I was technically only suppose to wear contacts every other day. There was some fudging so I wore contacts on my rehearsal and wedding day πŸ˜‰ FInally in Nov 09, the doc told me I could wear contacts daily, but I don’t. My eyes still get tired really easily and I can’t handle wearing them for long period of time (10+ hrs) for 2 days in a row. Now Im stuck with my glasses. I really want Lasik but 1. am TERRIFIED of the pain and being awake for it and 2. don’t have the money to spend on it.

PS: R has PERFECT vision, like he could fly a frickin plane perfect vision. Its annoying, for sure.

Ohhh girl I feel your pain with the bad eyes! I didn’t have my bad eyesight kick in until the 7th grade. It took me a year to be able to get contacts into my eyes. I’ve been really lucky though…in the past 3 or 4 years my prescription hasn’t changed! The eye doctor says that in your mid 20’s or so your eyes can start to even themselves out…I hope it stays that way!

On the other hand, Justin started having poor eyesight around age 15 or so. And a few years ago he got LASIK eye surgery and now has perfect freakin vision. Hate him. No wait, just kidding. But anyway, he totally understands how it feels to have bad vision and then to now have perfect. I just wish I was brave enough to do the LASIK surgery…the thought of it scares me to DEATH!

My husband has 20/15 and it makes me SICK!!! I have -2.25 in both eyes. It hasn’t changed in the past two years so I’m hoping it doesn’t get worse. I used to use Acuvue also but they felt like something was always in my eyes and irritating them so I tried Acuvue 2 and those work WONDERFUL!

As for the camera settings … those are EXACTLY what I see!!!!

I would never EVER recommend Ossip either bc they are WAYYYYYY overpriced (and btw NO it’s not “how we do it in Indiana”). I have VSP and my doc charges $35 for an annual visit to check my eyes!! I love my eye doctor!

I used to be fine & for the most part I can see – but since I got a deskjob, my eyesight sucks. Sometimes I get headaches when I’ve been staring at the computer too long so I have glasses that help.

My guy has perfect 20/20 vision… but he also has grey hair, so I guess we’re even πŸ˜‰

I like your macro camera setting comparison! That’s pretty much what it looks like when I go without my contacts. Good luck with finding new contacts that work for you, I know I would die without my contacts. I hate my glasses because my eyelashes constantly rub against them when I blink!

Loman Eye Care in Carmel. AMAZING. So helpful. They spent over an hour with me MAKING SURE they got it right.

Why didn’t someone warn us about Ossip!?! LOL!
